As part of the 64th National conference of the Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, a half-day Workshop will be conducted on “Animal Models in Neurophysiology – To study behavior & neurodegeneration”.
Organizing team: Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology– MMMC and KMC, Manipal.
Venue: Central Animal Facility, MAHE, Manipal
Duration of Workshop: 3 1/2 hours
Aim of the Workshop:
The workshop aims to demonstrate and give hands-on interactive experience on standardizing rodent models for normal behavioural & cognitive studies as well as various neurodegenerative disorders (Ischemic Stroke, Vascular Dementia [VD], Alzheimer’s Disease[AD] and Sleep deprivation)
The deliberations will focus on demonstrating the utility of these techniques in basic neuroscience research in lab settings.
Post-graduate students, Researchers, Doctoral students, Early career Faculty, Scientists & Physicians with special interest in basic Neuroscience Research
Techniques and modalities covered:
|Domain||Parameter measured||Technique used|
|Neurobehavioral & cognitive studies||Motor and cognitive assessment||Rotarod, Gait analysis, Novel object recognition tests [NORT ], T – Maze and Passive avoidance tests, Radial arm maze test, Water maze test|
|Rodent model of Ischemic brain injury (BCCAO model)||Surgery causing cerebral ischemia||Histology [demo of cresyl & golgi stained slides showing injury/deficits]|
|Rodent models of AD by intra cerebro-ventricular infusion using stereotaxic apparatus||Neuro-Surgery- Intra-cerebro ventricular injection||Histology [demo of cresyl stained slides showing AD plaques/ deficits ]|
|Sleep deprivation model||During REM sleep- Unbalanced / atonic rats falling into the water/Jerky movements||Camera enabled visual observation|
