Debasish Bandyopadhyay

Dr. Debasish Bandyopadhyay, PhD.

Dr. Debasish Bandyopadhyay obtained his M. Sc. degree in Physiology (with specialization in Biochemistry) from University of Calcutta. He obtained his Ph. D. degree in Physiology also from University of Calcutta in 1996 (CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata). He carried out his Post-Doctoral research works at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology as a CSIR Research Associate and Senior Research Associate (Pool Officer).

He has extended his Post-Doctoral studies further at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, TX, USA for some time. He has served as the Reader and Founder Head of the Department of Biotechnology, Assam (Central) University, Silchar, Assam, India. Thereafter, he has also served as the Reader & Head of Centre for Biotechnology, Viswa Bharati University (a Central University), Santiniketan, Bolpur, India. Later, he joined Department of Physiology, University of Calcutta on September,2006 as Reader and since then serving this Great Old University in various capacity.

He has served as Head of the Department of Physiology, University of Calcutta for two tenures (one from 2007 to 2009 & another from 2015 to 2017). He has obtained funds for his research activities from University Grants Commission, Govt. of India, New Delhi; CSIR, Govt. of India, New Delhi,’ Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. He has also obtained grants for collaborative research from Indus Biotech Pvt. Ltd. Pune, India, for carrying out research works on some of their products.

Prof. Bandyopadhyay has served as ‘Organizing Secretary’ of international conference held at the University of Calcutta, Organized Refresher Course in Life Sciences on behalf of UGC Academic Staff College of University of Calcutta, and, served many times as the resource person for refresher course and orientation programmes held on various occasions at University of Calcutta. He has delivered earlier many invited lectures at many national and international confereces. He is the life member of ‘Indian Science Congress Association [ISCA], Kolkata’; ‘Physiological Society of India’; Society for Biological Chemists of India [SBCI]). Prof. Bandyopadhyay is currently serving as the Chairperson of the Board of Undergraduate Studies in Physiology of University of Calcutta, and, he is also currently serving as the Convener of the Ph. D. Research Advisory Committee (Ph. D. RAC) in Physiology, University of Calcutta. He is also the member of a number of government controlled committees. He has served as reviewer of many top class national and international journals.

Currently, Prof. Bandyopadhyay  is a member of the ‘Editorial Board’ of the International Journals like, ‘Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine’ & ‘Melatonin Research’. His domain of research includes enzymology, oxidative stress and free radical biology, role of melatonin in the amelioration of stress induced disorders especially myocardial ischaemia, stress and drug induced gastric ulceration, heavy metal induced pathophysiology and new drug development. He has served as research supervisor of many students who have obtained their Ph. D. degree in Physiology from University of Calcutta.

Prof. Bandyopadhyay has published more than 90 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals.
